In the winter months, winter finches such as Pine Grosbeak, Evening Grosbeak, and Common Redpoll can be abundant. Sharp-tailed Grouse can be found in snow-covered agricultural fields. In the spring and summer, Brewer's Blackbird can be found along the roadways along those same fields. North of Sault Ste. Marie, there is boreal forest habitat, making species like Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, Canada Jay, and Spruce Grouse a possibility.
Whitefish Point Bird Observatory in Michigan, a major migrant trap, is just over an hour drive from Sault Ste. Marie. Also on the Michigan side is the Rudyard Flats, which is one of the best places in North America to find Snowy Owls in the winter.
